The career of Mark Ereth, M.D. has been marked by innovation and collaboration. He founded and directed a multidisciplinary research group at Mayo Clinic whose primary purpose is to reduce hematostatic perturbations associated with high blood loss surgery. This multi-modal approach has included the development of assays of platelet function, drug level assays, bio-friendly coatings for cardiopulmonary bypass circuits, topical hemostatic agents, and sophisticated laboratory guided transfusion algorithms. Dr. Ereth also conceived, designed, and executed Mayo’s Comprehensive Patient Blood Management program. This program reduced transfusion for cardiac surgery by 50 percent and reduced transfusion-related expenditures in excess of $25 million. As an inventor, he holds patents for four medical devices. In his 25 years at Mayo, he provided anesthesia and critical care to more than 10,000 patients and authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts.
Upon retirement from Mayo Clinic, he founded Transfuse Solutions, an innovative and progressive Patient Blood Management Consulting and Data firm. Dr. Ereth’s work here focuses on novel solutions to common problems solving patient safety and over-utilization issues.
